No banning of Happy Hour in Iowa City...for now

Right before New Years, I discovered a story about Iowa City considering the ban of Happy Hours. While I was a bit behind the times, I did opt to write about it as I thought it was one of the more ridiculous things I had ever heard. It turns out, a majority of City Council members indicated that they did not support the proposal, either.

That can only mean one thing: they read our Blog. As Borat would say...VERY NICE!

"A majority of City Council members indicated at a work session tonight that they did not support a proposal that would require establishments with liquor licenses or wine or beer permits to sell alcoholic drinks only for their listed price. Under the plan, those prices would have to be filed with the city clerk and remain in effect for at least a week, meaning an establishment could not change drink prices each day or for certain periods in a day. Several council members, while seeming to want to address the issue of access to cheap alcohol, said the proposal would take too many resources to enforce."

News? From around Iowa? Of course it is.

UI Children’s Hospital ranks in the nation’s top 25 - "According to the survey, UI Children’s Hospital is the 20th ranked pediatric hospital in America. In addition, the pediatric emergency care provided in the Emergency Treatment Center at UI Hospitals and Clinics is rated fifth in the nation."

Number of Iowans killed in war lowest since 2003 - Four Iowans died in 2008, making the number of Iowans killed in war in 2008 the lowest since the war in Iraq began in 2003. Only 4? Don't get me wrong, any amount of Iowans dying in a retarded war is a tragedy. But I was definitely expecting more. Glad it was a low year. Hopefully they can hit the ZERO mark for 2009.

Taste of ’Loo set for Jan. 22 - Not really sure why they are doing this in the winter, especially in downtown Waterloo, but 11 downtown businesses are teaming up with Main Street Waterloo to create a Taste of ’Loo from 5 to 9:30 p.m. Jan. 22.

Iowa judge sides with former Hooters waitress - Damn the Gazette and their stories about Hooters waitress without pictures. I mean seriously...do you think I care about what the hell a Hooters waitress does outside of bringing me my wings? Ok, I guess maybe a little. Apparently this Hooters waitress was fired from the Davenport Hooters because she had bruises on her face after a domestic assault. And now I feel like a douche.

News from around Iowa - 2009 Style

Family will likely have say in Ferentz's future - It looks like we weren't the only ones that noticed ESPN's ridiculous coverage of the Outback bowl. By that, we mean the 20 minutes where we were held hostage by the announcers in their attempt to verbally force Ferentz to take a job he hasn't been offered yet. J.R. Ogden over at the Cedar Rapids Gazette writes a great article where he gives his opinion. I think its spot on, myself.

Outback Bowl Beach Day - The street team for Tampa Bay Metromix went down to hang out with on Clearwater Beach with a bunch of Iowa Hawkeye fans for the Outback Bowl beach day. Careful...they mix in some Gamecock photos, too.

2008 officially among coolest and soggiest ever in Iowa - "It was the fourth-wettest and 12th-coldest year since 1872, according to the annual summary compiled by state Climatologist Harry Hillaker." Iowa has its own Climatologist?

Crews Free Man Buried Up To Chin In Corn - More of these stories are EXACTLY what Iowa needs to improve its reputation. Rescue crews in Malcom, Iowa helped free a worker Friday who was buried up to his chin in corn.

Featured Iowa Website: Hawkeyes For Kirk

During the Fourth Quarter of the Outback Bowl, ESPN Announcers Sean McDonough and Chris Spielman discussed a rumor about the Cleveland Browns coaching position and how Kirk Ferentz owed it to himself to take it should he be offered it.

Like many seasons in the past, the success of this year combined, with the numerous coaching vacancies in the NFL, has given rise to more rumors about the potential for Kirk Ferentz to leave his position as Head Coach of the Iowa Hawkeyes for more lucrative ventures in the NFL. However, the rumors this year seem to have more substance, due largely to Scott Pioli, the Vice President of Player Personnel for the New England Patriots and one of Kirk Ferentz’s good friends. The Cleveland Browns is courting Pioli for their chief football executive, and it has been widely rumored that he has said his first and only choice is Kirk Ferentz.

In the final 20 minutes of the game, the ESPN announcers pushed an agenda in their mindless babbling. While Iowa fans tried to enjoy their moment of glory, ESPN continued to push this rumor down the throats of every Outback bowl viewer tuned in. In our football program’s finest hour, Sean McDonough and Chris Spielman’s behavior tainted our experience by suggesting our beloved coach should leave.

The Out-Of-Towner: Hawkeye Outback Ass-Kickin!

Everything yesterday went completely according to script. My version of it anyway. Our boys played a great game, as was expected. Spurrier's South Carolina squad was completely outmatched in all aspects of the game. It was a good way to finish one of the most memorable seasons I have ever witnessed. It may even be enough to vault the team to a top 25 finish for the season. Today is a good day to be a die-hard Hawkeye fan.

Yesterday's ass kicking started out with the Hawkeyes marching right down the field with such a balanced ground and air attack that it looked like the boys wouldn't even break a sweat all afternoon. It quickly spiraled out of control with four SC turnovers and a commanding 21-0 lead in the first half. The second half didn't fair much better for the GameChickens either. Another turnover and 10 pity-points later, the game was wrapped up with a 31-10 Outback bowl stomping by the Hawks.

Shonn Greene finished his last game as a Hawkeye with 121 yards rushing and another 3 TDs to finish the year with a school record 1,850 yards rushing and 20 TDs. That peformance capped off his 13th straight 100+ yard performance of the season and also gained him the Outback Bowl MVP honors. That trophy will probably look pretty nice next to his Big 10 MVP trophy and the Doak Walker Award trophy for the nation's rushing leader. On a sad note though, Greene did announce his intention to enter the NFL Draft this year. He is projected to go somewhere between the 20th pick and sometime late in the second round. But although we'll miss him next year, he really can't be blamed for opting out of his senior season at Iowa. The timing is right for us to watch number 23 on Sundays. Good luck Shonn!

The Out-Of-Towner: Back with the First Post of 09

Here we go Hawkeye fans! The big day is almost upon us. At 10 o'clock tommorrow morning we shall bear witness to a huge Outback bowl victory. South Carolina, while very well coached, is totally outmatched in size and physicality. And the team chemistry that our beloved Hawkeyes have shown all season just can't be outdone.

I don't know how many of you saw ESPN's show last night where a random animal from the Tampa zoo picks a winner for the bowl game every year(80% so far), but even a damned tiger knows that Iowa will win this game. I am actually a little disappointed the bowl selection committee couldn't come up with a closer match and a little more competition. Even watching the SC players' interviews you could see the fear in their eyes. No shit, it was visible! But hell, I guess I really shouldn't bitch about watching our boys head stomp these fools.

Last News from Around the Hawkeye State of 2008

Outback Bowl a special gift for 95-year-old fan - The Gazette has a great story about a 95 year old Hawkeye fan. "Although she's never been to a football game at Kinnick Stadium, Hazel Driscoll has been a Hawkeye fan as long as she can remember. And at 95, she will get to see her beloved Hawks play live for the first time. Her sons are taking her to Tampa's Outback Bowl Thursday for her birthday present. Driscoll turned 95 on Dec. 24."

Economic chill on Outback Bowl is balanced by Iowa wind chill - "But bowl officials say the game will still approach what they contend is a typical $40-million tourism impact. Hotels are packed and hordes of Iowa and South Carolina fans converged on Clearwater Beach on Tuesday."

Kroul and King prepare for final game together - We are REALLY going to miss these two next year. I hope someone picks up the torch on D.

Is the IC City Council on Drugs or just Bored?

I decided to check my hotmail the other day to see if anyone emailed me anything interesting. Like usual, it was just spam. Some might label the life I live as boring or uneventful, lonely and sad even. They wouldn't be wrong, trust me, but most of it is by my choice. I opted to focus on other things in life, this site being one of them. But if I still lived in Iowa City, being boring and uneventful could get me elected to the Iowa City City Council.

After I got done deleting my spam, I logged out to find a pleasant story being suggested to me MSNBC. Iowa City Considers Ban On Happy Hour. It was a heading that nearly caused the demise of my mouse, due to the speed and force at which I tried to click on the link to read the story. It was an instant WTF moment.

The IC City Council is considering a happy-hour ban at their next scheduled meeting on January 5th (6:30PM at Emma J. Harvat Hall). The ban would require any bar or restaurant with a liquor license or permits to have a written schedule of prices, filed with the city clerk, at least a week in advance. That means drink prices couldn't change by the day or hour. City officials want the state to restrict alcoholic specials to help the college town's efforts to curb excessive drinking.

This isn't the first time the city has attempted such things. The council has declared full out war on drinkers in Iowa City, and this is the lastest tactic in their underhanded war. Iowa City and the University have tried for years to address a binge-drinking problem in town. While some legislation like banning all-you-can-drink specials, was probably wise, banning or even restricting any happy hour at a 21 and up bar or restaurants is ridiculousness of the highest degree.

Tuesday means more Hawkeye News

Most readers will be quick to notice that this news post is ALL HAWKEYES. In an attempt to ramp up the hype for the bowl game, the news for today and tomorrow will be ALL HAWKEYES. We better win on Thursday...or it may drive me to start drinking again.

Hawkeye Fans Leave for Florida - Nearly 500 Hawkeye football fans fill the Eastern Iowa airport and boarded planes on Monday, heading to Florida and Thursday's Outback Bowl. Most fans are just excited about the warm weather. If you aren't excited about the bowl game yet...it's time!

Greene focused on game, not future - "Shonn Greene could make a decision on whether he will return for his senior season by mid-January. But right now, the Iowa running back is just focused on helping the Hawkeyes beat South Carolina in Thursday's Outback Bowl."

Tampa Bay Online trying to stir up some shit - Kirk was being interviewed about the Outback Bowl. "With the Big Ten ties to bowls down here, that's part of the reason we recruit an awful lot of good players in this state," he said. "They don't all go to the three schools - the three major schools." Now the Tamp Bay Online is trying to spin it as if he was talking smack about University of South Florida. Come on already, no way Ferentz was talking smack about anyone. So not his style. Glad to see the Tampe Bay Online values truth.

Trojans' defense doesn't rest, but is it the best? - Kirk Ferentz was quoted in an Ivan Maisel article on EPSN.com, so this article is getting included in the daily news dump. Ferentz is always a class act, no matter how you slice it.
