About The Hawkeyes

The University of Iowa is a prominent national university known for its renowned research programs. The University was founded in 1847 (originally named the State University of Iowa) and was Iowa's first public institution of higher learning. The campus is located in Iowa City, a city of approximately 100,000 total residents in southeast Iowa. Almost 31,000 students enroll at the University each year, with almost 2/3rds coming from the state of Iowa.

The University was the first public university to admit men and women on an equal basis, as well as the first known law school west of the Mississippi. The University of Iowa has more than 100 areas of study and is organized into eleven colleges granting undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees. It also operates one of the nation's most advanced teaching hospitals. Iowa was ranked the 24th best public university in the nation and the best university in the state of Iowa (DUH!) by the 2008 edition of U.S. News and World Report. The school has graduated a wide variety of accomplished alumni.

The Iowa Hawkeyes are the athletics teams that represent the University of Iowa in NCAA Division 1A and Big Ten competitions. According to Wikipedia, the term "Hawkeye" originally appeared in the fictional novel titled The Last of the Mohicans, written by James Fenimore Cooper, and was later used to describe the people of Iowa. The state itself acquired the nickname through the efforts of two individuals, David Rorer of Burlington and James Edwards of Fort Madison. Not long after the state acquired the name, so did the university. More than 10 years after the publishing of the book, the University of Iowa coined the nickname for its athletic teams.

The Hawkeye nickname was granted a logo of sorts in 1948, with the creation of a drawing. A Professor of Journalism, Richard Spencer III, created a cartoon character. What would later become known as the tiger hawk, the character was an instant favorite and eventually gained its name in the statewide contest staged by the University's athletic department. John Franklin, of Belle Plaine, Iowa, was the man who suggested "Herky".

Since the times of Frank Sinatra, Herky has been a fixture at the University of Iowa. Dressed in the school's colors, Black and Gold, Iowa's mascot has played an important role in all of the school's athletic events of the years Though his costume and attire consider antique, Herky is a staple in the state of Iowa.
