Well Hawkeye fans, it been quite a ride hasn't it? Tommorrow at 11 a.m. our beloved Hawks will take the field at Kinnick stadium for the last time this year to square off against a lackluster Minnesota team. When discussing tommorrow's game it's tough not to think about what could have been. This could have been the last hurdle of an undefeated season, a national title bid, perfection. Well, it's not.
What it is is another chance to showcase a very talented Iowa team who is still in contention to earn an invitation to a BCS bowl game. It is a chance for Iowa to finish the season with an outstanding 10-2 record. It is a chance to send out 17 seniors on a winning note at home. Tommorrow's game is a lot more than what should have been.
So what's left to say about the game? Not a whole lot to be honest. We absolutely piss-pounded Minnesota last year and I fully expect tommorrow's contest to go about the same. Get yourself prepared to watch Iowa's defense crush a completely overmatched offensive unit. It will most likely be pretty tough to watch (for MN fans).
The big story of the day will once again be the play of freshman quarterback James Vandenberg. Was last week's outstanding performance a fluke or is he the real deal? Is Vandenberg's John Elway-like cannon for an arm the future of Hawkeye football? I for one think this kid is for real. Only time will tell I guess but tommorrow all eyes will be on him.
Another question. Can Vandenberg's recievers catch his passes? Hopefully another week of running routes have put them on the same page. Hopefully. Although it doesn't make quite as big of a difference at this point and on this stage as last week's game, it does make a difference (see paragraph 2). Catch the goddamn ball! If they can pull that off, Iowa wins 42-10.
Tommorrow I plan on getting wasted by game time to try to block out all the counterproductive "what-if" thoughts and sentiments. I suggest you do the same because the last thing I want to hear from the fans sitting near me is a slew of snivelling about what could have been. Get over it. Be proud of your team. Go Hawkeyes!
