Does the title sounds a little far fetched? Good, then I've accomplished my goal.
The search for Iowa's new men's basketball head coach has been everything short of complete insanity over the last few weeks. Iowa's athletic director Gary Barta has been very tight-lipped about his endeavors in finding a replacement for the recently fired Todd Lickliter, which has the Iowa Blog-o-sphere and Twitterverse going nuts with theories and hypotheticals.
At this point, 92% of all posters on any Hawkeye forum have heard from "a source" that Iowa's next head coach is definitely going to be [INSERT NAME HERE].
BJ Armstrong, Bruce Pearl, Keno Davis, Dr. Tom Davis, Bobby Knight, Steve Lavin, Les Jepsen (no, seriously), every assistant John Calipari ever had...no matter how crazy the coaching candidate might seem, if you name them they've likely already been mentioned in reference to the opening on a forum thread or tweet somewhere.
That's why I've decided to finally throw out my dark-horse candidate for Iowa's next head coach.
That's right, the former 80's Hawkeye legend himself Steve Carfino. The Australian National Basketball League's Mr. Magic, Steve Carfino.
Hey, if everyone else can get nuts with this search, so can I!
Carfino played guard at Iowa during the early 1980's. His high-flying style and his three-point shooting won the hearts of Hawkeye fans across the country, and his dimpled-smile won the hearts of every teenage girl in Iowa.
He became the 18th Hawkeye in school history to score 1,000 career points, finishing his tenure at Iowa with 1,037. He was drafted by the Boston Celtics in the 1984 NBA Draft, before accepting an invite to play in the Australian National Basketball League that was forming.
He joined the league in 1986 and never looked back. Carfino made quite a name for himself in the NBL, and was runner-up for the league MVP in his first year.
During his NBL career, he had 3,089 points (23.4 points avg), as well as 750 assists, 501 rebounds and 378 steals, and was inducted into the NBL Hall of Fame in 2004.
Now, Carfino is focused on his new Australian TV station that highlights American sports, according to Wikipedia.
Yup, my source is Wikipedia, which is far more reliable than some random forum poster who's cousin's sister's bowling ball polisher has a guy who knows a guy on the inside that says Bruce Pearl is just waiting till the tournament is over to be named head coach at Iowa. I've said it before, but I'll say it again...some people should really be punched in the face daily. Yes, I might be one of those people myself, but that is neither here nor there.
The source aside, maybe it's time for the former Hawkeye to come back to the States to resurrect his former alma-mater from the brink of basketball humiliation.
For the life of me, I can't really think of how this could work out or why Carfino would want the job. But, he was a great player at Iowa who helped put professional basketball on the map in Australia. If he can bring basketball down-under, he can bring basketball back to Iowa.
There you have it. Who the hell needs Gary Barta? The Hawkeye Nerd officially endorses Steve Carfino for the new head coach of Iowa men's basketball.
