A recent news story featured in the Iowa City Press Citizen and the Daily Iowan struck a little too close to home for this website. The story involves a Hawkeye bar getting sued for being a Hawkeye bar. A law firm representing the University of Iowa claims a restaurant called The Hawkeye Hideaway Pub and Grill, located at 310 E. Prentiss St. in Iowa City, is violating the school’s trademark rights.
Only about a month after Hawkeye Hideaway opened, the school is demanding owner David Moore to cease using the "Hawkeye" name, as well as the black and gold color combination in the bar's logo. Obviously, it is in the best interest of the university to protect its trademark and as such it is making sure this establishment doesn't profit on the logo, trademark, or colors of the University. Selling the rights to usage of this school's logo and colors is one way the school generates revenue, and they should do everything to protect that.
Another possible reason leading to this suit is that the university is afraid of a possible association with an establishment that serves alcohol. The school likely wants to distance itself from a bar with a similar name. In a town that constantly fights underage drinking, the university might view this bar as a step in the wrong direction.
Upon digging further, details show that David Moore has previously owned popular bars in Iowa City known as the Soho, Field House and College Street Billiards to name a few. This could also suggest there is more to this story than meets the eye.
With this somewhat regular post, IowaHawkeyes.Net attempts to bring the readers a better attempt at separating out local Iowa News from national news found elsewhere on the web. Rather than reading the same old links from the Gazette or Press Citizen, this is an attempt to give you stories from other online sources. And often times, they are completely ridiculous. It seems that Main Stream Media in Iowa keeps a few things from people. This installment has a rather funny comment from our beloved Senator Chuck...
Iowa Sen. Charles Grassley: First suicide for AIG bonus-getters, now remark about colleague's wife [NY Daily News] - Grassley (R-Iowa) was reminding Conrad of a past favor, apparently at a speaking function, and how he expected something in return. If you live in or near Iowa, you are probably all too familiar with the Floods of 2008. Almost every major city in Iowa, from Des Moines to Iowa City to Waterloo, was affected by the flooding. Some cities, like Palo, Iowa, have been completley destroyed.
The floods affected thousands of long-standing businesses, impacting not only the economy throughout Iowa but also the culture, as well. One of those businesses was the Wig and Pen, a long-time hot spot in Iowa City and a favorite of Iowa Hawkeye coaches, athletes and fans.
the Wig and Pen Pizza Pub, known for its EXTREMELY delicious pizza, is located near the Iowa River and took on almost 7 feet of water at the peak of the flooding this summer. Needless to say, the restaurant was devasted.

Right before New Years, I discovered a story about Iowa City considering the ban of Happy Hours. While I was a bit behind the times, I did opt to write about it as I thought it was one of the more ridiculous things I had ever heard. It turns out, a majority of City Council members indicated that they did not support the proposal, either.
That can only mean one thing: they read our Blog. As Borat would say...VERY NICE!
"A majority of City Council members indicated at a work session tonight that they did not support a proposal that would require establishments with liquor licenses or wine or beer permits to sell alcoholic drinks only for their listed price. Under the plan, those prices would have to be filed with the city clerk and remain in effect for at least a week, meaning an establishment could not change drink prices each day or for certain periods in a day. Several council members, while seeming to want to address the issue of access to cheap alcohol, said the proposal would take too many resources to enforce."
UI Children’s Hospital ranks in the nation’s top 25 - "According to the survey, UI Children’s Hospital is the 20th ranked pediatric hospital in America. In addition, the pediatric emergency care provided in the Emergency Treatment Center at UI Hospitals and Clinics is rated fifth in the nation."
Number of Iowans killed in war lowest since 2003 - Four Iowans died in 2008, making the number of Iowans killed in war in 2008 the lowest since the war in Iraq began in 2003. Only 4? Don't get me wrong, any amount of Iowans dying in a retarded war is a tragedy. But I was definitely expecting more. Glad it was a low year. Hopefully they can hit the ZERO mark for 2009.
Taste of ’Loo set for Jan. 22 - Not really sure why they are doing this in the winter, especially in downtown Waterloo, but 11 downtown businesses are teaming up with Main Street Waterloo to create a Taste of ’Loo from 5 to 9:30 p.m. Jan. 22.
Iowa judge sides with former Hooters waitress - Damn the Gazette and their stories about Hooters waitress without pictures. I mean seriously...do you think I care about what the hell a Hooters waitress does outside of bringing me my wings? Ok, I guess maybe a little. Apparently this Hooters waitress was fired from the Davenport Hooters because she had bruises on her face after a domestic assault. And now I feel like a douche.
